Maker Space at the Collingwood College Spring Fair

On sunday 16th oct 2016 i ran a pop up maker space at the CC Spring Fair from 10am till 4pm. I was assisted by Hannah, Kylie and Craig. I had planned 4 activities over the day and had created a display of resources that could be perused, several posters explaining the pupose of the makerspace and what we hoped to achieve.

the activities planned:

drawbots

toy dissassembly

scratch

arduino

the drawbots and toy dismantling were very popular. in fact we were somewhat overwhelmed with interest from children and parents which didnt leave much time to manage the other activities planned.

many parents commented positively on the initiative and were very supportive. some asked why they didnt know of the initiative so the pop-up makerspace was successful in what it planned to achieve, that being to inform the wider community of its presence.

  1. I just loved watching one little person pull apart an old toy with such concentration and engagement. Made me want to join him, maybe next time…From an engaged parent.

  2. Drawbots were a great idea for the pop-up fair, especially because they generate so much interest from the kiddos! Did you see kids collaborating and working together on their projects?

    • hi kate,
the drawbots draw a lot of attention which is what is needed to get people involved. they are simple to make, require readily available bits and pieces and can be made in many ways which leaves the door open for creative interpretations. interestingly, the kids all wanted to make one of their own, so with this particular exercise there was not as much collaboration.
